The southern Costa Blanca or “White Coast” begins at
Alicante, there are many property developments in, around and south
of this area, the sunshine and mild climate together with the guarantee
of an improved quality of life has meant that thousands of British
and other European residents have bought homes in this area for
retirement or holidays.
Just
below Alicante, where the areas main international airport is situated,
is the purpose built village of Gran Alicant and nearby Spanish
town of Santa Pola. Here you will discover lovely beaches and sand
dunes. Santa Pola is famous for the salt flats which are home to
many bird species it is also an important fishing town. A little
further down the coast are the lovely resorts of La Marina, Guardamar
and La Mata with plenty of excellent restaurants and facilities
and a protected natural area of over 11 miles of safe, clean sandy
beaches and dunes with pine forests.

The
central and largest town of the area is Torrevieja. Here you
will find excellent shopping facilities, an indoor fruit,
vegetable, fish and meat market and large supermarkets, plus
an abundance of wonderful restaurants. Torrevieja town has
lovely beaches with an extensive promenade for evening strolls.
There is a marina with bars and restaurants and an old fishing
port, all add to the charm and interest of this bustling resort,
where despite the tourists it still remains a very Spanish
town.
On
the outskirts of Torrevieja there are many natural beauty
spots especially around the natural parks of the salt lakes. |
Heading
inland you will find the beautiful town of Elche, surrounded by
a forest of over 300,000 palm trees, said to have been planted around
300 BC by the Phoenicians. Not far away are the towns of Orihuela,
with its Gothic cathedral, and Crevillente, famous for its carpet
and rug production. Close to Orihuela and the small town of Bigastro
and picnic area with walks around the Embalse de La Pedrera, a local
reservoir and beauty spot. Not far from here you find the popular
residential towns of Almoradi, Rojales, Dolores and Algorfa where
the new La Finca golf course is being constructed.
A
number of beach areas lie to the south of Torrevieja in an area
known as the Orihuela Costa; Punta Prima, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Playa
Flamenca and the beaches of Campoamor are to name just a few. Throughout
these resorts there are many shopping areas and an incredible choice
of restaurants as well as a host of facilities of all kinds; it
is no wonder that so many people settle in this popular area.

Coming
inland from the beaches of the Orihuela Costa we find some
of the best golf courses on the entire Costa Blanca; Villamartin,
Las Ramblas and Campoamor all offer first class golf and club
facilities.
These
areas are also popular housing locations where you can find
anything from a studio apartment to a detached villa with
private pool.There are many commercial centres around these
urbanisations with supermarkets, bars, restaurants, banks
and all other facilities. |
The access and road system in the area is excellent; a new motorway
links Alicante to Cartagena and Murcia. This means travel to either
Alicante International airport at El Altet or the Murcia, San Javier
airport is extremely easy, quick and convenient with many low cost
flights servicing both airports.
